About Ms. English
Aloha!
My name is Ms. English and I am a 7th Grade English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher at Wheeler Middle School. I am really excited to be teaching at Wheeler Middle School for a few reasons:
1. I LOVE Hawaii!
2. My husband is in the military and I have a deep respect for the military community
3. I really enjoy teaching middle school because I think it is a time for students to explore!
I think that there are a lot of connections that can be made between the military and education, and teamwork is the connection we will be focusing on in my classroom. Students will be in groups, or "squads" in which each member has an important role and responsibility to fulfill. I think this will promote a sense of both individuality and teamwork, a concept that we will really be exploring during Quarter 1 while we read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.
Much like my students, the question "where are you from?" is a difficult one to answer. While I did not grow up in a military family, I have moved around quite a bit in my lifetime. I was born in England (yes, Ms. English, the English English teacher - I think I was destined for this career) and spent the first 8 years of my life there. I then moved to the U.S and finished my primary and secondary schooling in Westchester, New York. I went to college at the University of Delaware (go Blue Hens!), went back to New York to start my teaching career, then spent some time working at a college in Monterey, California while my husband was stationed there. I spent some time teaching in Phoenix, Arizona, and then moved to Hawaii to teach here at Wheeler!
Education is a true passion for me. I recently completed my Master's in Education through Johns Hopkins University. At college, I majored and received Bachelor's degrees in both English and Interpersonal Communication, and I graduated Cum Laude with membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. I truly hope that my own passion for education will be evident to my students and that they will develop a sincere appreciation for learning, too!
